Timed Events
Updated: 26th November 2023 22:55 (UTC)VAT4956 uses the symbol NA as the unit for the timed events. This symbol is translated as "Sunset to Moonset" or "Sunrise to Moonset" depending where it appears in the month. These terms were coined by Abraham Sachs (Source). So, the tablet doesn't actually read "Sunset to Moonset", these are inserted by the translator when the symbol NA is used. In the table below there are 40 timed events that are identified by the NA symbol. Only 14 of the times are within 5% of the time they are said to be recording. That means for every timed-event that supports the translation of NA as "Sunset to Moonset" or "Sunrise to Moonset" there are nearly three timed-events that do not support it. Therefore, the results are inconclusive. In the article Babylon's Horizon we explore an alternative to generally accepted use of the unit NA.
The numbered times 1-8 below are the timed events on VAT4956 for each of the years 588 and 568 BC. These are then compared with all the other timed events found on astronomical diaries. The year 568 BC has two 6's this is because the translators have added 10 to the 7 that is on the tablet. One entry is for the translation (17) the other is what is visible on the tablet (7). The date and time the event started is included so you can check the times yourself. The diaries are dated using the astronomical date so -567 is 568 BC
